USP’s seismology center denies earthquake after Google alert

The Android earthquake alert system, which belongs to Google, issued this dawn (14) a warning of earthquake for residents of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro who use the app on their cell phones. The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo clarified that “it did not issue any earthquake warning” in the early hours of today and that, according to the Center for Seismology of the University of São Paulo (USP), no seismic shake was recorded in the state.

“There is no registered occurrence or in attendance by the teams of municipal civil defenses,” said the Civil Defense, during the early hours, in a statement sent at 3:29.

On its support page, Google reports that “in regions where it is available, Google Play Services for safety and emergency can use its location or other smartphone information to provide certain service.” He adds that “Android can send a warning seconds before an earthquake so you look for a safe place faster.”
