The Cuban democratic directory announced that it will present the case of Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez before the International Commission “Justice Cuba” and demanded the international conviction of the regime’s repressive policy. “We denounce before the world, to the dictatorship of Cuba as a whole as the only guilty, for the death of Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez and that of all those who have preceded it,” said the DDC.

The death of Oviedo Rodríguez occurs in an alarming context of deaths in Cuban prisons. According to the Cubalex Legal Information Center, at least three inmates have died in the Bonato prison: Hugo Sarmiento Socarrás, reported as suicide by hanging on February 10; Giovanis Ortega and Irai Nietowho died on February 1 and 2 respectively, allegedly due to extreme malnutrition and abandonment. In addition, on January 30, Yankiel Justiz Despaigne36 years old, died of tuberculosis in southern hair prison without receiving timely medical treatment.

“The Cuban State is responsible for the life and integrity of people under their custody. These deaths reflect the systematic negligence of the regime and extreme precariousness within the prison, ”said Cubalex in a statement.

Inhuman detention conditions further aggravate the health of people deprived of liberty. Factors such as overcrowding, unhealthiness, malnutrition and scarcity of drinking water facilitate the spread of diseases and deteriorate the health of inmates. The lack of hygiene, adequate ventilation and sufficient food are also recurring problems in Cuban prisons.
