Reports of domestic violence on the rise in Japan

Tokyo, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) Complaints of domestic violence are increasing today in Japan, reported the National Police Agency.

A 2021 report reveals that the authorities received 83,042 complaints over the course of last year, the highest figure in the last two decades.

According to official data, 74.8 percent of the alleged victims of domestic violence were women between 20, 30 and 40 years of age, although reports of abused men also increased.

Perhaps due to the prolonged duration of the Covid-19 pandemic, more people were trapped in serious situations inside homes, a police official was quoted as saying by the Kyodo agency.

On the other hand, the statistics published the day before by the administrative body indicate a slight decrease in cases of harassment, 461 fewer than in 2020.

Once again, females (87.6 percent) suffer more from cases of harassment that mostly involve known subjects, while stranger perpetrators represent around 19 percent.

It also highlights the record of 1,628 queries on revenge pornography, understood as the disclosure of private audiovisual or graphic materials, with explicit or suggestive sexual content, without the consent of the individual represented in them.

By the way, the police specified that in 20 percent of the cases, the victim and the perpetrator met through social networks.

In Japan there are several decrees that criminalize gender violence, including the Law for the Prevention of Spousal Violence and the Protection of Victims.

Other legislation points to workplace harassment and the prohibition of the improper use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitor people.
