In recent days, the political landscape in Argentina has experienced a significant turn with the agreement in the Senate to advance in commission with the suspension of simultaneous and mandatory open primary elections (PASSED). This agreement, which was reached after intense negotiations and meetings between the different parliamentary blocks, marks a milestone in the electoral policy of the country.
The suspension project of the PASSED It was approved by the Chamber of Deputies last Thursday with a majority of 162 votes. The initiative, promoted by the Executive Power and supported by several political forces, seeks to temporarily eliminate the step for the electoral process of 2025.
The original proposal of the National Executive was the final elimination of the PASSEDbut in the absence of sufficient consensus, a temporary suspension was chosen. The agreement in the Senate was achieved thanks to the intervention of Vice President Victoria Villarruel, who achieved the commitment of the dialoguistic blocks, in particular of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), that they would not block the treatment of the project.
The initiative will be discussed tomorrow from 15 in the Constitutional Affairs Commission, and after the meeting this noon it was clear that the text will have a green light to reach the enclosure in a session that will be summoned for Thursday of next week.
The decision to suspend the step has generated various reactions within the different parliamentary blocks. While some UCR senators oppose the measure, others have decided not to block the treatment of the project to avoid being seen as those that prevent its progress.
The majority of political forces with representation in the upper house have announced that they will accompany the initiative, which increases the chances of law. The path that will be union for the homeland (UXP) is still an unknown.
Open line
The driving of the bench, chaired by José Mayans, maintains open line with Cristina Kirchner, who opposes the suspension of PASSED although she has maintained a prudent silence as president of the Justicialist Party (PJ).
So far, Mayans has not summoned a block meeting, which is expected to happen just next week, one or two days before the session. The meeting in the Constitutional Affairs Commission will be key to the future of the project. The commission, which until last year was in the hands of the expelled Edgardo Kueider, is now headed by her vice, the Kirchnerist senator Sandra Mendoza. The election of the new commission holder will also be an important issue at the meeting.
