The Rio de Janeiro State Public Prosecution Service (MPRJ) has opened an investigation to investigate the causes, environmental consequences and responsibilities in relation to the fire that reached this weekend a lubricant factory in the state capital. The MPRJ will request, on Monday (10), from the State Environment Institute (INEA) a detailed technical report on the operation of the factory and on environmental impacts in the region.
The MPRJ reported that it accompanies the situation of the factory, today belonging to Cosan since 2013, when it was still from the Exxonmobil. That year, a Public Civil Action (ACP) was filed due to the environmental contamination caused by the factory.
In 2024, the company Cosan expressed interest in establishing a Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) with the MPRJ, according to the prosecutor himself, with the purpose of repairing environmental damage caused by the factory operation. But the negotiations have not been completed due to the indefinition, so far, in relation to the value of the indemnity.
Suspension
With the fire, TAC dealings are suspended “until the causes of the accident and their environmental impacts are fully determined,” the MPRJ said by note.
The fire, which began last Saturday (8), took 28 hours to be extinguished, according to the Fire Department. Inea has sent a team of technicians to the site to evaluate possible environmental damage.
