Researchers discovered in Colombia to the ‘Coendou Vossi’a new species of pork, a finding that It occurs 126 years after the last discovery of “Porcospines with Type” Location “ In the Andean country, the Humboldt Institute reported on Saturday.

“The research work started in 2018 when a group of scientists were doing some analysis of the porcupines in Colombia, especially the species ‘Coendou Quichua’, which was considered wide distribution in Ecuador, Panama and Colombia”explained the researchers Héctor Ramírez-Chávez, from the University of Caldas, and Elkin Noguera, of the Humboldt Institute.
However they started “To notice differences of this species with some populations of pork that inhabit the dry forest of the Caribbean and the Magdalena River of Colombia.”
Therefore, the researchers reviewed different specimens of the ‘Coledou Quinchua’ that are in the collections of US museums, United Kingdom and Sweden and Other Colombian institutions to perform DNA tests and morphological and biogeographic analysis.
This allowed them to determine that Colombia’s specimens did differences with the ‘Coendou quichua’, whose typical habitat is in the Ecuadorian Andes.
“After the previous review of sister species of puercoespines registered in Brazil, Peru and Panama we find that this new species is not present in any of these countries, therefore, it is determined as endemic to Colombia,” The two researchers pointed out.
The discovered pork is smaller than its brothers, but its tail is longer.

Other species of porcospines with confirmed presence in Colombia are the ‘Coendou longicaudatus’ (long -tailed porcospine), ‘Coendou pruinosus’ (carirrous porcospine), ‘Coendou Rothschildi’ (Panamanian porcupine) and the ‘Coendou ichillus’ (Chiquito hedgehog).
