Commercial War: Peruvian Agroexportation must prioritize quality and costs

The imposition of duty from the United States to countries such as Mexico, Canada and China is about to unleash a Commercial War that directly or indirectly can affect our country.

Percy Muente, General Manager of Agrícola Cerro Prieto (ACP), told Peru21 that the export sector of non -traditional goods has not yet been affected by tariff ads by the United States government. However, he indicated that scenarios such as these impose a series of challenges to the sector to mitigate the impact.

The Executive indicated that, in the eventual case, that the US tariff policy falls on known countries, the Peruvian agro -export sector indirectly could be affected by the appreciation of the dollar, which makes the inputs that buy from abroad such as fertilizers or machinery Foreign

Likewise, he said that in case the United States decides to protect his agricultural domestic market and decided to impose a tariff on all products from abroad, there would be affected the Peruvian companies. Therefore, he indicated that the risks facing the sector require that Peruvian agro -exporters work more efficient in their production processes.

“A probable scenario that happens is that the US serious imports. At one point there was talk of that. This could contribute to generating an increase in prices to the United States consumers of the products we export, ”he said.

New markets

Muendo said that among the “top 10” agro -export products that Peru sells to the United States, blueberries, grapes, cocoa in grain, asparagus, mango, tangerine wilkings, preparations used for animal feeding, quinoa and paprika stand out.

He said that, if a tax measure is specified to these products in the US, Peruvian companies would have to boost other markets.

“There are many possible scenarios. The way in which companies must be prepared is to focus a lot on productivity, quality and diversify their export market, ”he said.

“Latin America is interesting for some of our products. Mexico and Chile are important places. We would also seek to diversify exports to Asia countries and increase businesses in Europe, ”he concluded.
