In monitoring of the legal strategy to stop the illicit arms traffic, the legal consultant of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Pablo Arrocha, held a working meeting in Washington with Jonathan Lowy and the lawyer Steve Shadowen, representatives of Global Action Against Gun Violence. Both are part of the team that represents Mexico in demands against manufacturers and weapons sellers in the United States.
According to the SRE, Rrocha traveled to the US capital by instruction of Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to supervise the preparation of the audience that will take place on March 4 in the United States Court, in which the maximum Court will determine whether or not companies may enjoy legal immunity, despite the fact that their practices facilitate the illicit traffic of weapons towards Mexico.
In addition, the team discussed the strategy of the litigation in Arizona, which has advanced to a new phase of favorable evidence to our country.
Mexico filed its first demand in 2021 before a Federal Court in Massachusetts against eight manufacturers and distributors of Arsenal, with the argument that its negligence contributes to violence in national territory. In 2022, the government filed a second complaint in Tucson, Arizona, directed against five stores that allegedly sell weapons with full knowledge that they will end up in the hands of organized crime.
According to the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives agency in the United States, around 200 thousand weapons are illegally trafficked to Mexico every year. This flow, the Mexican government warns, is the result of negligent commercial practices by manufacturers and vendors.
