Research from the Brazilian Book Chamber, entitled Book Consumption Panorama, shows that 16% of the Brazilian population over 18 say they have bought at least one book in the last 12 months.
Compared to other cultural activities, the book was the second most consumed category, just behind the cinema. Most consumers bought between three and five books in the last 12 months.
Women represent 62% of consumers who have bought more than ten books in the last 12 months. Forty -one percent of these women are from class B and 39% of class C. Class B women are concentrated in the Northeast and those of class C in the Southeast.
According to the study, most consumers find school books expensive and books for personal and professional improvement. Books for entertainment and leisure, as well as children’s and youth books, are not considered expensive or cheap.
The survey shows that 55% of consumers prefer to buy books in stores online And 39% prefer to buy in physical stores. The Northeast is the region that concentrates the largest percentage of the population that prefers to buy online.

According to the survey, 56% of consumers have only bought physical books in the last 12 months, 14% of them only digital books and 30% have consumed both printed and digital books. Men concentrate the largest percentage of consumers who buy only digital books. The south of the country has the lowest percentage of consumers who buy only digital books and the Northeast concentrates the largest percentage (36%) of people who have consumed books in both formats.
