In January, President Donald Trump asked the State Department to designate cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations”, a measure that increases the scope of the application of US law on criminal groups.
According to analysts, with the designation there is a risk of complicating international businesses, restricting asylum requests and tensing relations with Mexico.
The measure points to two key promises from Trump-to strengthen migration and drug trafficking-and seeks to put cartels such as Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) along with terrorist organizations designated as Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Hezbollah and the State Islamic.
Mexico has been opposed for a long time, arguing that cartels are not motivated by political purposes like others in the terrorist list, but for profit.
