Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said Wednesday that his country agreed to accept migrants from other nations after they are deported by the United States.
Arévalo announced the “Third Safe Country” agreement at a press conference with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “We have agreed to increase the number of deportees flights by 40 %, both of our nationality and others,” he said.
The agreement is similar to an offer made by the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, earlier this week.

Bukele said that El Salvador would continue to accept deported Salvadorans who lived in the United States without legal status, as well as members of MS-13 international criminal gangs or Aragua train.
In return, Bukele, known for his aggressive approach to address the violence of gangs in his country, would accept an US government rate.
“We are willing to receive convict criminals (including convicted American citizens) in our megaprision in exchange for a rate,” Bukele wrote Monday night on social platform X.
“The rate would be relatively low for the United States, but significant for us, which would make our entire prison system sustainable,” he added.
Rubio later said Bukele’s offer was “generous”, but could face “legalities” in the United States.
