THE Northeast Consortiuman entity that brings together the nine states of the region, gave inauguration on Wednesday (5) to the new president, Governor Rafael Fonteles (PT), from Piauí, in a ceremony in Brasilia. He succeeds the governor Fatima Bezerra (PT), who was ahead of the group over the past year.
“It is an immense honor to take the lead of the Northeast Consortium at such a decisive moment for our region. With courage and commitment, we will continue to promote actions that value our potential, stimulate economic growth and strengthen our commitment to social equity,” he wrote The governor on his social networks. Topics such as sustainability, security and economy are among the priorities of Fonteles’s mandate, which runs until December this year.
Created in 2019, the Northeast Consortium seeks to promote regional integration, articulate integrated public policies, attract investments, make shared purchases and stimulate the development and well-being of the region.
During the event that marked the possession of Fonteles, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Northeast Consortium and the Ministry of Finance, around the agenda of the ecological transformation of the federal government. The ceremony was attended by government ministers, such as Fernando Haddad (Fazenda) and Alexandre Silveira (Minas and Energy).
PLANALTO MEETING
In the late afternoon, six of the nine governors and three other deputy governors were received by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in the Planalto Palace.

Rafael Fonteles is 39 years old and began his political career as Secretary of Finance of Piauí (2015-2022), when he coordinated Pro-Piauí, an investment program focused on the social axis and economic development. Fonteles is a Bachelor of Mathematics from the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) and Master in Mathematical Economics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA).
