Dance and art for seniors in Havana: Lizt Alfonso puts rhythm to the elderly
The dance company Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba He took dozens of elders in Havana on Tuesday, as part of an initiative inspired by the exhibition “grandparents and grandmothers borrowed” by Cuban photographer Monik Molinet.
About thirty older adults met at the headquarters of the Malecón Art 255 gallery in a public dance class, with popular rhythms such as the Chachachá, La Rumba and La Salsa, under the instructions of the company’s director, Lizt Alfonso.
“More than a class is a party, in which we are going to dance with the grandparents and grandmothers all the rhythms that have accompanied their lives until today (…) due to the power of the call it has had, we have decided to leave this encounter and schedule, at least, once a month, ”said Alfonso to EFE.

The “dance is not age” initiative is complemented by “grandparents and grandmothers, from Molinet, exhibited since last November in the framework of the Havana Biennial, which concludes on February 28.
The Cuban photographer (Pinar del Río, 1986) and resident in Mexico recreates in the 23 self -portraits of the sample the life of nine grandparents and interacts with them in the intimacy of each of their homes, while documenting what happens when intervening in their routines
The photos are accompanied with texts such as those that appear in family albums with anecdotes of the exact moment in which they took the image.
According to a company’s press release, Alfonso and Molinet seek .
“It is a space that has also been created with the aim of providing love and always keeping the united family: children, parents, grandparents can come … and I think that’s what it is about. To keep grandparents with happiness, ”concluded Alfonso.
