Federal Police (PF) agents arrested on Tuesday (4) a man who was part of a criminal organization specializing in bank branches in the metropolitan region of Rio. The arrest and personal search warrants were served at the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the investigations of the Crime Repression of Crimes against Heritage and Arms Trafficking (Delepat) the prisoner participated in an attack on the branch of Caixa Econômica Federal located in Praça do Cocotá, on Governador Island, North Zone, occurred in May 2023. He worked as a ramp assistant at Galeão airport, being responsible for putting and removing luggage from the aircraft.
A resident of Governor Island, the man would have left Morro do Barbante, monitored the area and passed on information about the presence of police and vehicles to criminals. Five explosive experts were arrested in the act by the Civil Police for participation in the attack. In addition to involvement in the attack on the Caixa branch, the man is also associated with the local criminal faction, which dominates the territory with the use of war power.
According to the PF, the group practiced at least nine attacks against the heritage of Caixa Econômica Federal between 2022 and 2023, in the metropolitan region of Rio, through the use of the modality called “Novo Cangaço”. For the actions, the gang had technicians in explosives, security guards, vigilantes and funders. Since October last year, this has been the fourth member of the PF gang.
The “new cangaço” is characterized by the use of rifles and explosives, shots at police and pedestrians, employment of hostages such as shield, deactivation of the region’s electricity service, and nail use to drill police tires during the escape.
