Santo Domingo.- In an act held at the El Pardo Palace, in Madrid, headed by King Felipe VI, the Committee for America of the Pro -Spanish Academy Foundation (RAE) was formally constituted, to which the businessman José Luis Corripio (Pepín (Pepín ) and the journalist and ambassador Juan Bolívar Díaz.

This new committee has great prestige members, including three Latin American presidents: Ernesto Zedillo (Mexico), Ricardo Lagos (Chile) and Julio María Sanguinetti (Uruguay). In addition, figures such as the former president of the Spanish Government Felipe González, writers Mario Vargas Llosa and Sergio Ramírez, and businessmen such as José Luis Corripio, Nuria Vilanova, and Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan, former secretary general Ibero -American General. Also part of the Committee Ana Teresa Ayala, Marlon Brevé and Joaquín Maza Martellí, from Honduras, El Salvador and Uruguay, respectively, along with Juan Bolívar Díaz.

Of the 18 members of the Committee, which, like the Board of Trustees, has King Felipe VI as honorary president, three countries – Mexico, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic – have double representation. Several of the new members, including Corripio, participated telematically at the constitutive meeting held last week.

According to the Statutes, the Committee has as its main objective to guide and advise on the identification of opportunities that strengthen and make visible the actions of the Royal Spanish Academy and the National Academies of the Spanish Language. His mission will be to ensure the care and evolution of Spanish.

The official presentation of the Committee took place during the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, an event that brought together some 30 personalities from the cultural, business and diplomat.

The director of the Foundation and Vice President of the Committee for America, Santiago Muñoz Machado, took stock of the activities carried out in 2024 and presented the program for 2025. He highlighted the next digital edition of the PANHISPANIC DICTIONARY OF THE LEGAL SPANISH and the Ibero -American legal platformwhich will be launched during the Ibero -American Judicial Summit, which will be held in Santo Domingo in May of this year.

King Felipe VI, in his opening speech, expressed his thanks to both the Board of Trustees and the Committee, underlining the relevance of preserving, strengthening and expanding the Spanish, a language that is spoken by 600 million people in Latin America, has more than more than 62 million speakers in the United States.
