The minister’s statements were made during the solemn opening session of the Electoral Court’s work in 2025.

During his speech, Carmen Lúcia said that the TSE has already begun preparations for the 2026 presidential elections and the next municipal election, which will be held in 2028.

“To guarantee free and democratic elections in Brazil, this Superior Electoral Court works uninterruptedly. For the 2026 elections, the measures have already begun to be implemented in the immediate sequence of the election. It had to be started, as the issue of voter calculation and how many ballot boxes they need, “he said.

The president of the TSE also defended the democratic regime in the country and said that freedom and justice can only be guaranteed with democracy.

“The Electoral Justice will continue to act rigorously, serenity, impartiality and committed to democracy, ensuring the freedoms of electoral and voters. That we have a great period of perseverance in the path of democratic construction,” he added.

The 2026 presidential elections will be chaired by Minister Kassio Nunes Marques, current TSE vice president and STF minister. Carmen Lúcia’s term will end in August next year. Kassio was nominated for the Supreme Court by former President Jair Bolsonaro.
