Federal Deputy Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) was elected on Saturday (1st), in the first round, for the position of President of the Chamber of Deputies, with 444 votes of the 513 deputies. At 35, he will be the youngest president of the house since the country’s redemocratization, but carries an experience of four consecutive terms as a federal deputy for Paraíba.
Favorite frank in the dispute, supported by 17 of the 20 parties with seat in the ChamberMotta needed at least the absolute majority of support (257 votes) to win in a single shift, but went further and settled the invoice with ample support between the pairs of virtually the entire party spectrum.
The vote did not exceed that obtained by Arthur Lira (PP-AL) in February 2023, when he was reelected with the vote a record vote of 464 deputies.
The two competitors in the dispute, Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS) and Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ) obtained 31 and 22 votes, respectively. There was a record of two blank votes.
After the result proclaimed, Motta was called to the table to sign the term of office and take over the chair occupied by Lira. The block that elected Motta brings together the PT, the party that runs the federal government, and the PL, the main opposition subtitle. The other members are PCdoB, PV, Union, PP, Republicans, PSD, MDB, PDT, PSDB, Citizenship, PSB, Somos, Avante, Solidarity and PRD. Together they represent 494 of the 513 federal deputies.
Hugo Motta’s mandate runs until February 2027, when there will be election to the board of directors of a new legislature. In addition to being the main representative of the Chamber of Deputies, the president of the Legislative House is the one who defines the plenary voting agenda and supervises the institution’s work, including the various thematic committees. The mayor is the second in the succession line of President of the Republic, after the vice president, and is part of the Council of the Republic and the National Defense Council.
Born on September 11, 1989, in João Pessoa (PB), Hugo Motta is a doctor and from a family acting in politics in Paraíba. In 2010, the youngest federal deputy in Brazil was elected at the time, at the age of 21. With a conciliatory profile, Motta is known to have good political transit both in both left and right sectors, as well as in the business segment. She inherits the political influence of the group hitherto led by Arthur Lira.
In a statement, the president of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated Motta for the election. “I am sure that we will advance further in this successful partnership between Executive and Legislative, for the construction of an increasingly developed and fairer Brazil, with fiscal, social and environmental responsibility,” said Lula.
Senate
Earlier, the Federal Senate also held the election to the presidency, with a widen Senator David Alcolumbre (Brazil-AP Union), which returns to office after four years, and for New Board of Directors of the Institution For the next two years.
