Candidates for the Chamber's Presidency speak in Plenary

The three candidates who compete for the chairmanship of the House of Representatives spoke at the plenary session that will define the next board of the house on Saturday afternoon (1st). It wins that obtain the absolute majority (257 votes) and first round. If no one reaches this minimum support, an eventual second round is made, with the two most voted, winning that they have a simple majority of the votes. The next mayor will be in office for the next two years, until February 2027, when the mandate ends.

In addition to being the main representative of the Chamber of Deputies, the president of this Legislative House is the one who defines the Plenary’s voting agenda and supervising the institution’s work, including its commissions. The mayor is the second in the succession line of President of the Republic, after the vice president, and is part of the Council of the Republic and the National Defense Council.

Speeches

The first to use the podium, by order of draw, was the conservative deputy of opposition Marcel Van Hattem (Novo-RS). In his speech, he promised to guide the impeachment President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The second to speak was Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ), from the left. He began his intervention by criticizing what he called “kidnapping of the public budget by the Brazilian Parliament” and defended review about the forms of distribution of parliamentary amendments.

“We are not against budget amendments as a form of complementary contribution. However, the way today is dysfunctional, inefficient and scandalous. The secret budget has not been overcome but revamped. There are about $ 50 billion in amendments and, Part of them, without transparency, “he said.

He also emphasized guidelines such as the end of the 6×1 workday, the income tax exemption for those who earn up to $ 5,000 per month and taxation of great fortunes. Vieira also cited priority for topics such as the fight against climate crisis, defense of indigenous peoples, quilombolas and riverside, as well as the regulation of digital platforms to protect the public sphere against discourse of hatred and undemocratic preaching.

Finally, the favorite candidate, Hugo Motta (Republicans), representative of the center parties, climbed to the podium. He concentrates the support of 17 of the 20 parties with a seat in the House of Representatives, including the support of current president Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Motta spoke to guarantee the autonomy of the House and the legal prerogatives of the deputies.

“We want a strong chamber, with the guarantee of our prerogatives and in defense of our parliamentary immunity. Hugo Motta nominally thanked the current 1st Deputy Mayor Marcos Pereira (Republicans-SP), who gave up the candidacy around the ally. Motta made the same gesture to other candidates who gave up the dispute along the way, such as Antonio Brito (PSD-BA) and Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA). And he also made emphatic compliments to Arthur Lira, whom he can succeed in charge of the house. “President Arthur leaves us the largest legacy of legislative achievements and real transformations in the lives of Brazilians that this house can, with the participation of all, offer to the country, since Ulysses Guimarães,” he said.

After the speeches, Lira began the vote, which should advance beyond 18h. The deputies vote through electronic ballot boxes spread throughout the plenary and the green hall.
