From this Saturday (1st), cooking will be cheaper for most Brazilians. The reduction of the tax on the circulation of goods and services (ICMS), tax collected by the states, on gas. Each pound of liquefied oil gas (LPG) will pay $ 0.02 less than ICMS.
The exception will be for Bahian consumers. On Thursday (30), Mataripe’s privatized refinery announced the rise of cooking gas by 9.2%, which will lead to an increase of up to $ 8 per cylinder, according to the National Union of Liquefied Gas Distributing Companies of oil (Sindigás).
Based on the average prices surveyed by the National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANP) from February to September last year, the National Council of Finance Policy (Confaz), which brings together state farm secretaries, decided to reduce from R $ 1.41 to R $ 1.39 per kilo the ICMS of the kitchen gas. According to the board, the lowest average price by 2024 justified the tax reduction.
Although I reduced ICMS for cooking gas, Confaz raised the tribute to gasoline, ethanol, diesel and biodiesel. For the model in force since last year, the Council decides in October of each year, changes in ICMS that come into force in February of the following year.
ICMS rates went to the following values:
Fuel | Tax rates until January | From February 1st |
Gasoline / ethanol | R $ 1.37 per liter |
R $ 1.47 per liter |
Diesel / Biodiesel | R $ 1.06 per liter | R $ 1.12 per liter |
Cooking gas | R $ 1.41 per kilo | R $ 1.39 per kilo |

Since 2022, ICMS rates on fuels have been established at fixed values per liter, or pound in the case of cooking gas. Prior to that, state rates obeyed a percentage of the final price defined by each unit of the federation.

Not only will the kitchen gas be cheaper. Also this Saturday comes into force the 1% reduction in the price of natural gas to distributors, announced by Petrobras on Thursday.
Updated every three months by Petrobras, natural gas prices, used by large consumers, such as industry, obey the Brent and Dollar Oil Barrel oscillations. For the quarter that starts in February, the dollar rose 5.3%, but the reference of oil (Brent) fell 6%, justifying the reduction of 1%.
Since December 2022, according to Petrobras, the average price of natural gas sold to distributors accumulates 23%reduction. The account includes both the recent 1% reduction and performance and demand incentive awards, approved in May and October 2024, respectively.
