The number of jobs with a portfolio signed in the private sector reached a record volume of 39.2 million in the last quarter of 2024. According to data from the continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), released on Friday (31) by the Brazilian Institute Of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the result, which does not include domestic employees, is 3.3% higher than in the same period of the previous year, ie 1.3 million more people.
“Since 2022, we have been recording, for all quarters, a significant annual expansion of the population with a formal contract. We had an important drop in the year 2020, due to the pandemic. This population is already recovering at the end of 2021, it recomposes itself in 2022. And even after its recomposition, it continues to grow in 2023 and 2024. We are not only in the recovery of 2020 losses, but it is expanding ” , says IBGE researcher Adriana Beringuy.
The number of jobs without a formal contract also increased in the period (5%), reaching 14.2 million and maintaining a high level, close to the record recorded in the third quarter of 2024.
Another segment that presented discharge was that of public sector workers, which grew 4.5% in the year and reached the contingent of 12.8 million. Both workers on their own (26 million) and domestic (5.9 million) remained stable compared to the last quarter of 2023.
The informality rate was 38.6 % of the occupied population (or 40 million workers) against 38.8 % in the quarter ended in September and 39.1 % (or 39.5 million) in the same quarter of 2023.

Continuous PNAD showed that the occupied population grew 2.8% in the year and reached 103 million in the fourth quarter.
“In the pandemic, we have 83 million people as occupied. Four years later, we have a growth of almost 20 million people busy, ”says the IBGE researcher.
Among the sectors that have increased jobs in the period are the general industry (3.2%), construction (5.6%) and trade (2.8%).
Also high were transportation, storage and mail (5.2%), accommodation and food (4.2%) activities, information and financial, real estate, professional and administrative (3.7%) and public administration, defense, defense. Social Security, Education, Human Health and Social Services (3.8%).
The level of occupation, which represents the portion of occupied people in relation to the age population, was 58.7%, 1.1 more percentage point than in the same period of the previous year (57.6%).
The unemployment rate was 6.2% in the last quarter of 2024, lower than that observed in the last quarter of 2023 (7.4%).
The underused population, that is, the one that is unemployed or works less than it could, was 17.8 million, the smallest since the quarter ended in May 2015 (17.7 million).
Already the discouraged population, which includes those who would like to work and were available, but who did not seek work for various reasons (could not work properly, had no professional experience, there was no work in the locality, was very young or very elderly), was In 3 million, 12.3% less than in the last quarter of 2023.
