National Universities are lagging in international ranking

Santo Domingo.-Mucha ink has been spent on the poor quality of pre -university education, getting to believe that with increasing investment abruptly in that sector, it would be possible to change course, which has been disappointing because the country is still in the last places of The Pisa test.

The looks have focused on school classrooms, without observing that a similar phenomenon occurs in higher education, to the point that no Dominican university appears among the 150 best universities in Latin America according to their quality.

The positioned improvement in the QS Latin America University Rankings 2025 has been the Pontifical Catholic University Mother and Master, which appear in the 161 position tied with other universities in the region, while the state -owned Autonomous University of Santo Domingo appears in position 351, surpassed by three other Dominican private universities.

The second best ranked Dominican University is Intec, in position 171, followed by UNIBE in 201 and the UNPHU in 301 position.

Other universities that appear in the QS Latin America University Rankings 2025 are O & M and Unicaribe in the 401 position.

The best in the region
In that ranking the number one position in Latin America and the Caribbean is occupied by the University of Sao Paol Rio de Janeiro, also from Brazil.

Missing accreditations
One of the key factors that explain this low performance of Dominican universities is the insufficient investment in academic research and development.

Unlike countries such as Chile, Brazil and Mexico, where universities receive important resources to promote scientific and technological production, Dominican institutions have limited budgets that restrict their capacity for innovation and competitiveness.

The research or discovery, employability of their graduates, global commitment and the academic are of the factors taken into account.

The egg or the chicken
In terms of the low quality of Dominican education, the question arises similar to which of which was born first, the egg or the chicken?, Because the universities receive the product of the pre -university education system, but the schools are guided by teachers trained in Universities with deficiencies, which creates a vicious circle.

The results of the PISA tests have repeatedly placed the Dominican Republic between the last parts of the world in mathematics, reading and science.

With poor basic education, students enter universities with serious difficulties for critical thinking, problem solving and domain of fundamental competences.

This affects the level of academic programs and the quality of graduates, creating a vicious circle that harms the country’s competitiveness.

Deficiency

– Investigation
One of the factors that affects the low rating of Dominican universities is the deficiency in research programs, to the point that many of them have none highlighted.
