According to Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State of the Trump Administration, the president’s interest to buy Greenland “is not a joke.”
Trump has expressed that he wants to convert Greenland, an autonomous territory in Denmark, in part in the United States.
And has not ruled out using military or economic power to achieve it. “This is not a joke,” said Rubio.
“It’s not about acquiring land for acquiring land. This is of national interest and must be resolved, ”he said.
Rubio said that the Arctic will become a critical point for maritime routes, adding that the United States has to be able to defend it.
To the question of whether the United States owned Greenland in four years, he replied: “Obviously, that is the president’s priority and has stated it.”
“We are not yet in a position to discuss exactly how we will proceed tactically. What I think may be sure is that within four years our interests in the Arctic will be safer, ”he added.
