Two Cuban fishermen survive seven days on the high seas eating raw fish

Mexico/“How do we survive? Nature is great. ” The fisherman Carlos Francisco Rodríguez González, 55, tells how he was shipwrecked and drifted along with Yusuan Fundora Massaguet, only 15 years old, for seven days, until they were rescued near Bahamas. “I am neither Catholic nor Christian, I begged all the virgins, everyone,” he said in an interview for the newspaper Girón What I thought would be a “fast fishing, it was complicated.”

At 12 p.m. last Thursday, January 16, he left his home only in Cerro (Havana). Rodríguez had planned to return at nine in the morning. After fishing in the capital bay, however, he wanted to enter the goat beach, “but frog legs were small and they broke me,” he said. A young man in another raft he knew tried to help, but the wind was dragging them inside.

“The water stream was taking us out for the east and P’Afuera; And nothing, not a boat for all that to give us a hand. Chamaco did not have experience either. They beat us the current and tiredness, ”said the fisherman.

Upon night, the boat with Cork of Polyspuma of Rodríguez broke completely, so they had to pass to that of Fundora Massaguet and “thus we were shipwrecked a week, practically without eating or drinking water.”

“Chamaco at some point even told me that he wanted to throw the rope, which he didn’t give more. And I didn’t let him give up.”

With just a three -year experience fishing, he said that when he usually leaves, he carries a gallon with water or a refreshment On this occasion he dispensed with them. After the first day on Altamar, Carlos Francisco launched a hook and captured a golden fish. “With the knife we took out the bandita, we put it in the cork to dry a little, and so we ate it. He ate more, even the egg, I disquerned myself. In addition, he took salt water, ”he said.

The fisherman said there were many sharks. “You saw the beautiful jumping and the fins in the water.” Rodríguez assures that he is not scared of the scenes. “If there is no fish wounded and that is bleeding, there is no reason to be afraid. More fear I had to die there dehydrated than bitten by a shark. ”

As the days passed, the despair seized fishermen: “Chamaco at some point even told me that he wanted to throw the rope, which he no longer gave. And I didn’t let him give up. ”

Rodríguez says he was born again when a ship to which the current dragged them. “With the small frog legs, one promoting and the other guiding towards the center of the ship,” he said. “Until we started shouting at all lung: ‘Aid! Help!’. Someone looked out and called the captain. And that rope they threw us was saving. ”

Carlos Francisco Rodríguez González was admitted to the Faustino de Pérez Provincial Hospital, while the youngest fisherman took the pediatric Eliseo Noel Caamaño. “After this I have told everyone: ‘I’m Quitao’. Although I am not going to die either, if one day I have to return (to fish), I return. To the sea you have to have respect. ”
