“I would rather die than surrender”: José Daniel Ferrer maintains a hunger strike in prison

Miami, United States. – Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer García assured, during An interview with the DNEWS programthat he would not go to the Execution Court to which he was summoned to appear on Tuesday.

On the previous day, Officers of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) They went to Ferrer García’s house To deliver a judicial notification that would force him to appear before an execution court, supposedly as part of the conditioning of his release.

“Yesterday [lunes, 27 de enero] In the afternoon, two National Police agents arrived at my home and gave me a notification, a citation for today [martes, 28 de enero] At 9:00 in the morning before an Execution Court. This is part of what the Diaz-Canel regime imposes on which we were recently released, ”Ferrer explained.

Immediately, he reiterated that he will not comply with that order: “I refuse to go to this summons because I made clear my jailers and several judges in the green sea prison that did not accept any type of condition.”

The objective of the citation would be to warn him that he can be returned to prison if he continues with his peaceful activism in favor of democracy in Cuba. “Without a doubt, the intention is to threaten me again that they will return me to prison if I continue with my peaceful activism for freedom, democracy and well -being of my people,” he said, after remembering the multiple imprisonment he has suffered.

The opponent, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), was deprived of liberty in 2003 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Later, in 2021, he was arrested again after the historic manifestations of July 11 that shook the country, and remained in the prison of Mar Verde in conditions that he describes as “infrahumas”.

Ferrer stressed that the Cuban regime considers any attempt at civic demonstration, the organization of opposition movements or public criticism. “Cuba is the only nation of a single party regime for more than six decades … Here basic freedoms such as freedom of expression, press, association meeting or demonstration are considered a crime by the regime,” he denounced.

In his statements, he also assured that he has no intention of leaving the island, despite the insistence of the authorities to force him into exile: “My great dream has always been to have a Cuba with rights and freedoms for all. There is no other option: fight until the last breath, even offering our lives if necessary. ”

Finally, Ferrer reiterated his commitment to continue his peaceful actions to denounce the lack of freedom in Cuba. He also recalled that the authorities have not been able to present positions with real livelihood and that their activism is fully framed within the right to freedom of expression and association. “The regime what you have always wanted is to force me to leave Cuba, especially silence me,” he ended.
