The Brazilian Press Association (ABI) will dedicate reports and a permanent session of the website To recall the murder of journalist Vladimir Herzog by agents of the Brazilian state, on October 25, 1975 at the base of Doi-Codi in São Paulo. The year Vladimir Herzog, as he was appointed by ABI, is part of memory initiatives in the face of the lack of justice after the torture and staging of suicide, with which the crime was tried to hide the crime committed on the premises of an army unit.
Supporter of the initiative, the Vladimir Herzog Institute (IVH) has ample material on the subject, including testimonials from colleagues from the press, contemporaries of Vlado, as the journalist was known. The “Herzog Case” joined decades of attempts to forget the abuses committed, including after the amnesty to torturers, but international complaint in 2018, at the Inter -American Court of Human Rights, led to reopening of the case by the Federal Public Prosecution Service, in 2020. Only in 2024 did the state recognize the persecution of the widow, Clarice Herzog, who refused to accept the official suicide version. She was considered persecuted politics and received compensation and a formal apology of the Brazilian government.

Vladimir Herzog was born in Yugoslavia, in territory that today belongs to Croatia in 1937. Jewish, his family fled during the country’s invasion of Nazi forces. They were in Italy until 1944 and emigrated to Brazil in 1946. Studying philosophy at the University of São Paulo, Herzog became a journalist in 1959, when he began working for the Diary the State of São Paulo. He had passed through several other vehicles and was a teacher in the journalism courses. In 1975, in a second time on TV Cultura, already as director of journalism, was the target of the inquisition of the military regime. He reported to the police voluntarily on October 25, 1975, when he went to Tutóia Street, headquartered by the Information Operations Detachment-Internal Defense Operations Center (Doi-Codi/SP), where he was tortured and murdered.
The agents tried to empty the meaning of the journalist’s death, trading her with suicide. In his seventh -day mass, in an ecumenical act in the Cathedral of the See, 8,000 people were present in one of the first public acts of great strength after the institutional act 5, which hardened the military regime. According to text by the IVH, “the act and vlado became symbols of the struggle for democracy and against the Brazilian military dictatorship.” Its death certificate was only rectified in September 2012.
