CVG workers said that the Guayana Workers Hospital does not have the ability to serve all occupational patients who depend on this service and denounced the lack of specialists
Workers of the Venezuelan Corporation of Guayana (CVG) reported an increase in deaths from occupational diseases in the population of workers. They claimed that so far in January, at least seven workers have died because of diseases linked to their work exercise in factories; However, given the lack of official information, they do not have a precise data.
«Most basic companies produce occupational patients. Previously, the Organic Law on Prevention, Conditions and Work Environment (Lopcymat) protected us because there were standards and we had to have a profile to occupy certain positions. That included preparation, periodic and income periodic exams. In addition, the worker who had a disease was provided with the treatment, ”said one of the complainants to Radio Fe y Alegría News who preferred to protect his identity for fear of reprisals.
Article 70 of the Lopcymat defines occupational diseases as those pathologies that are acquired in work performance. To treat them, occupational medicine is used to control its effects and seeks to prevent, through industrial safety, their acquisition.
However, workers have been denouncing the cessation of this type of services for more than a decade. In addition to the lack of medical care and evaluation exams, they also have no personal protective equipment that, in plants with a large amount of alumina, tar and other components, are essential to protect CVG personnel.
No timely medical attention
The consulted said that the Guayana Workers Hospital does not have the ability to serve all occupational patients who depend on this service. Likewise, the lack of specialists has been diminishing with the health of older adults.
«In our contracts there are clauses where we had to attend periodic consultation at the Fragran Hospital and the Hospitalization, Surgery and Maternity (HCM) service covered it, but none of that has been possible to keep it over time, so, diseases are diseases are They increased. Many have been dying. We have any amount of dead due to occupational illness due to these pathologies. The most common diseases are pulmonary, musculoskeletal and hypertension. Also those that have to do with skin pollution and other organs, since we are subject to radiation, high temperatures, currents and atmospheric conditions. Many workers are already retired and are still under these conditions, ”said one of the declarants.
In Guayana they installed a series of health centers for the workers of the basic companies, thus eliminated the HCM service that allowed the worker to go to private clinics and then the company paid the costs of the services. According to the statements, the available health centers are not supplied to serve the population -dependent population of the CVG.
«In the so -called Workers Hospital, sometimes you arrive and the appointments are for seven or eight months. There is no treatment, there are no conditions. People who are far has been determined that they must have a critical condition to be able to attend them. Imagine what it costs right now. There is no ambulance, nothing to do and when they arrive, many have already died. That is the sad reality, ”he concluded.
