With success units of the Benemérito Fire Department of the Republic of Panama (BCBRP), of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), of the National Aeronaval Service (Senan), together with Brigadistas, volunteers and officials of the Ministry of Environment (Miambiente) achieved Control and extinguish the plant mass fire (IMAVE) that affected about a thousand five hundred hectares of natural forests and pajonal within the Protected Area Water Reserve Cerro Guacamaya, in Cañaveral, District of Penonomé, Coclé province.
For four days, more than 80 people per day of the Firefighters, Mamambiente, the Voluntary Brigades and the Sinaproc faced the broken of the land, at the high temperatures and the strong winds, risking their own lives to quell the fire. The effort was possible thanks to the joint coordination between the institutions and the support of the Coclé Governorate, the local authorities in Penonomé and various private companies that supported the effort.
For the extinction of this fire, the intervention of a helicopter of the National Aeronaval Service (Senan) was necessary, using the Bambi Bucket system to pour more than 1,800 gallons of water over the various incendiary foci.
“Miambiente has received indications that there was a criminal hand in this terrible forest fire, which has destroyed 1,500 hectares and put at risk the water shots of 52 communities in the Cañaveral area. Announce today that our ministry will be implacable in finding those responsible for this criminal act: in the regional direction of Coclé they are already raising the relevant legal processes to apply the entire weight of the law to those who are responsible, ”said Juan Carlos Navarro, Minister of Environment, during work tour.
“Not only has he been attached to the natural resources and biodiversity of the area, but also against the personnel who risked their lives to extinguish the fire,” added John Trujillo, regional director of the entity in Coclé. “The call is clear: we have to stop these bad practices, which lead to energetic legal processes. We will support the investigations until we find those responsible. In addition, we ask the citizens to denounce those responsible and that they are alert as vigilants of their forests and their resources, to prevent and eliminate these forest fires so harmful to the country. ”
