Tradition on São Paulo’s birthday, Bolo do Bixiga turns 40

Created in 1985 by Armando Puglisi, known as Armandinho do Bixiga, the tradition continued even after his death in 1994. The event was maintained and organized by Walter Taverna, who died in 2022.

The São Paulo community maintains the tradition, as was possible to see today. The event started in the morning and, around noon, the cakes were cut and distributed to the public. People formed lines, some took pots and bags to carry their pieces.

Rains

The city’s population celebrates its birthday while having to deal with the losses of heavy rain this Friday (24). The capital recorded, at the time, the third highest volume of rain – 125.4mm – since the beginning of the historical series of the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), in 1961.

Blue Metro line 1, which crosses the city from the north to the south, is partially operational on Saturday due to flooding of the tracks and Jardim São Paulo station. The stretch between Tucuruvi and Santana stations is being served by buses from the Paese system. Furthermore, trains run at reduced speed on the rest of the line, from Santana to Jabaquara.

Along its route, the line takes you to iconic points in the city, such as Estação da Luz, Avenida Paulista, Praça da Sé, Liberdade neighborhood, Pinacoteca and Museu da Língua Portuguesa, in addition to the Tietê Bus Terminal. It is also connected to lines 2 green, 3 red, 4 yellow and 5 lilac of the Metro.
