The Rio Courts converted into preventive detention the arrest of the four men detained in the act for having bought and resold 800 tons of meat unfit for human consumption. The meat was purchased from a slaughterhouse in Rio Grande do Sul affected by the floods of May last year. They underwent a custody hearing this Friday (24).
In addition to the owners of the company, based in Três Rios, in the center-south of Rio de Janeiro, the trade manager and the logistics director are also under preventive detention.
The Civil Police stated that, to date, only 17 tons of spoiled meat sold to a slaughterhouse in the city of Contagem, in Minas Gerais, have been traced.
According to the investigation, which had the support of the Consumer Police of Rio Grande do Sul, in May and June the company’s partners took advantage of the tragedy to acquire 800 tons of beef that had been submerged “for many days” in Porto Alegre. .
They claimed that the intention was to manufacture animal feed. However, the investigation discovered that the destination of the unsuitable product was different. The meat was sold to other companies. The movement caused the group to make a profit “of more than 1,000%”, stated the Rio Civil Police, “putting consumers across Brazil at risk”.
Those investigated will be responsible for the crimes of criminal association, reception, adulteration and corruption of food, covering the entire country. The four were taken to a prison in the Gericinó Complex, west of Rio, where they will be available to the courts.
