Bustillo, without votes to be an ambassador to Peru: the ruling does not reach internal agreement

The refusal of the Broad Front (FA) and internal divisions in the government coalition question their approval.

The Frente Amplio has already advanced that the Venia will not vote, which forces the ruling party to have its six votes in the Permanent Commission, where three white legislators, Dos Colorados and a lobbyist participate. However, rejection persists in the Colorado Party. Senator Carmen Sanguinetti (Vamos Uruguay) confirmed that he will not support the designation, and deputy Sebastián Cal (open council) also anticipated his refusal.

For her part, the Colorada deputy María Eugenia Roselló (unite to grow) will define her position over the weekend, but advanced repairs regarding the time of the proposal. Roselló questioned that the designation is raised “with this rush”, considering that the government is about to finish its period.

Criticism and background

The designation of Bustillo not only generated tensions in the coalition, but was questioned by its role in the case of the passport granted to the drug trafficker Sebastián Marset. Although the main investigation was filed, judicial pieces persist on the concealment of information and the destruction of public documents.

The leader of Vamos Uruguay, Pedro Bordaberry, also expressed criticism of Bustillo, remembering that he was the only senator who did not vote his designation as an ambassador to Spain in 2012.

Orsi’s position

The elected president, Yamandú Orsi, recognized the right of Bustillo, as a career officer, to be appointed abroad, but warned that the next government will evaluate its administrative and judicial situation before ratifying it. “It generates noise, but it is a decision that will make Parliament,” said Orsi, who did not rule out an eventual return from Bustillo to the country if objective reasons arise that justify it.

The debate will continue in the next session of the Permanent Commission, although everything indicates that the ruling will not achieve the necessary votes to approve the venia.
