US praises Mexico for union vote "fair and safe" at Tridonex plant

“Workplace democracy is a cornerstone of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) labor provisions. People on both sides of the border win when workers can choose their union representation fairly. freely and fairly and without delay,” Tai said.

Tai said the United States will oversee Mexico’s certification of Monday’s vote, which follows a deal reached with Tridonex after a complaint from Washington filed under a labor enforcement mechanism of the US-Mexico-Canada trade pact. .

Win independent trade union

The independent union SNITIS obtained 1,126 votes on Monday, surpassing the 176 obtained by the current union CTM, part of one of the largest union organizations in the Latin American nation.

Employees at the Matamoros plant, a unit of US-based Cardone located in northern Mexico, began campaigning two years ago to replace a union they accused of failing to improve wages.

Cardone, which is not listed on the stock market, faced scrutiny from the Government of his country last year in one of the first labor complaints within the framework of the new North American trade agreement, T-MEC, signed by Canada, the United States and Mexico. .

Plant workers denounced that they were denied the right to freely choose their union. More than 80% of voting staff wore it on Monday, in an election that US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said she was being closely watched.

The vote came weeks after the CTM union lost its 25-year hold on a General Motors factory in the central city of Silao, to an emerging group in an election following another USMCA complaint.
