“Emilia Perez”, The musical about a drug dealer’s gender transition, filmed almost entirely in Spanish, led the Oscar competition with 13 nominations, a record for a non-English language film at the Academy Awards.
The internationalization of this edition of the lavish awards ceremony was also marked by the surprising inclusion of the Brazilian “I’m still here” in the best film category.
“The Brutalist”about the arrival of an immigrant to the United States after World War II, and the film adaptation of the musical “Wicked” were placed in second place in this Thursday’s announcement, with ten nominations for each production.

The Netflix film, which displaced “The Tiger and the Dragon” and “Rome” (each with ten nominations) as the most nominated in a language other than English, has entered strongly into this awards season that will culminate with the Oscar ceremony.
This year’s Oscar nominations were finally announced after being postponed due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
The deadline to vote was extended this month, due to the flares that harassed the entertainment capital and home of the Academy Awards and left at least 28 dead and tens of thousands of evacuees. But the Oscar ceremony remains on for March 2.
“I’m still here”
One of the big surprises of the announcement was the nomination of the Brazilian film “I’m Still Here” for the coveted category of best film.
Directed by Walter Sallesthe film about the disappearance of congressman Rubens Paiva in Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s, was also nominated in the best international film category.
Its protagonist, Fernanda Torres, who has just won a Golden Globe, was nominated in the close dispute for best actress, where she will compete with Demi Moore (“The Substance”) and Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”). Mikey Madison, who played a sex worker in “Anora”, and Gascón (“Emilia Pérez”) complete the picture.
In the men’s category Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Stranger”) and Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) entered the competition.

The film sparked threats of lawsuits from Trump’s lawyers, particularly over a scene showing the new US president raping his wife. The wildfires around Los Angeles They have impacted their residents, and the Oscars, and their voting, are no exception to this.
Specialists such as Deadline’s Pete Hammond predicted greater influence from the Academy’s international voters given that many local members are shocked by the consequences of the devastating flames.
