On Tuesday, the first official contacts between Mexico and the United States were made through a phone call made by the new Secretary of State of the neighboring country, Marco Rubio, with Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, reported President Claudia Sheinbaum. He stressed that the most humane and effective policy to address the migration phenomenon is cooperation for development and investment in places where there are people who emigrate out of necessity. That will continue to be our position with the Trump administration. It is essential that there be investments in Central America, in our country, of course, the importance of the treaty, which I am sure he also values.

Sheinbaum expressed confidence in having a good relationship with the United States. Today we are focused, obviously, on the interest of Mexico. Our interest is, obviously, the agreement with them on different issues, there is already communication. There are things on which we do not agree, but at this moment that is the essential interest that we are fulfilling and that we are going to fulfill.

He reaffirmed that for Mexico a central issue is to stop the illegal introduction of weapons into our territory from the United States.
Regarding the possibility of promoting a joint position in Latin America against Trump’s policies, he mentioned: not everything needs an immediate response

He said that he maintains communication with the governments of the region; announced that he will soon speak with the president of Brazil, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva – as he already did with Bernardo Arévalo, of Guatemala – and in this context he expressed: our support always for Panama, the people and the government

–In the conversations between Foreign Minister De la Fuente and Marco Rubio, was there any talk of a date for you to visit the United States or for you to come here from Washington?
–The conversations began. I am convinced that we are going to have agreements on the different issues. Conversations begin and we will report the progress.
–Have you contemplated, at any point…?
–Not at this moment. We will wait day by day.
Sheinbaum recalled that currently migratory flows to the northern border have decreased substantially. But if some foreigners arrive at the northern border, then there is attention, because it is an obligation of any humanitarian government. Which, by the way, has nothing to do with being a safe third country. That has nothing to do with it; For there to be an agreement of this type, there must be a signature, it is, let’s say, bilateral.
