Trump denies threatening Canada and Mexico with tariffs to renegotiate the T-MEC

The tycoon threatens to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada starting February 1 for considering that they allow the entry of migrants in an irregular situation and with drugs.

Both countries “have allowed millions and millions of people to enter a country where they should not be. They could have stopped them and they did not,” he declared this Tuesday.

“The fentanyl coming through Canada is massive, the fentanyl coming through Mexico is massive. And it’s killing people, and it’s destroying families,” he complained.

Trump claims to have recently discussed fentanyl with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I said, we don’t want that garbage in our country. We’re going to stop it,” he said at the White House.

He briefly referred to his order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

“It sounds so nice,” he commented.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, called for “a cool head” in the face of the measures adopted on Monday by Trump after taking office.

The millionaire declared a national emergency on the border with Mexico to confront what he considers an “invasion” of migrants and decided to continue building the border wall.

It also resurrected “Stay in Mexico,” a program that forces migrants to wait for the outcome of the immigration process on the other side of the border, and annulled the possibility of them legally obtaining an appointment through a mobile phone application (CBP One ) to reach a port of entry.
