One million people fled Ukraine in first week of Russian invasion

One million refugees have fled Ukraine for neighboring countries since the start of the Russian invasion a week ago, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Thursday.

“In just seven days, we have witnessed the exodus of a million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries,” Grandi tweeted.

“For millions of others, inside Ukraine, it’s time for the guns to fall so that humanitarian assistance can reach and save lives,” he added.

The head of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) plans to travel to Romania, Moldova and Poland, three of the countries that are hosting this flow of refugees, in the coming days.

According to data from the Polish border guard, by Wednesday, more than half a million people had entered the country from Ukraine.

A UN balance not updated since Tuesday also indicates that more than 115,000 people fled to Hungary and around 80,000 to Moldova.

This week, UNHCR launched an appeal emergency fund to raise $1.7 billion to help exiled or displaced people for the conflict in Ukraine.

According to his estimates, 12 million people in the country and another four million who fled abroad will need protection and assistance in the coming months.
