In the midst of the growing wave of crime in the country, the Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñezresponded strongly to comparisons between the violence experienced in Peru and that of Mexico and Colombia.
During a press conference, Santiváñez stressed that his management is carrying out “hard, committed and serious” work to contain insecurity and prevent a more extreme scenario of violence.
“To give you an idea, in Mexico 100 people die every day, and in Colombia, in case you don’t know, in 2024 13,000 deaths were recorded. So don’t come and compare us. We are doing hard, committed and serious work. Don’t be storytellers,” said the head of the Ministry of the Interior.
Juan José Santiváñez expressed that his position is at the disposal of the president and the premier. He clarified that those who criticize the ministry’s work do so due to a lack of information about ongoing efforts.

Although Santiváñez sought to differentiate Peru’s situation from that of our Latin American neighbors, the figures show a worrying trend in the region.
In 2024, Mexico recorded 30,057 intentional homicides, while Colombia reported 13,341, the lowest figure since the pandemic, according to official data.
For its part, Peru closed 2024 with 2,011 homicides, an increase of 30% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, in the first 22 days of 2025, 106 violent deaths have already been recorded.
However, the clear difference in population density between Peru, Mexico and Colombia should be highlighted. In our country, there are 34 million people, while 128 million live in Mexico and 52 million in Colombia.
