Dina Boluarte describes a non-existent Peru in Switzerland

The president Dina Boluarte He took advantage of his trip to Switzerland – where he participated in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum – to describe a Peru very different from the one that all Peruvians experience daily. “Peru is a country that has recovered its political, economic and social tranquility,” he said. And although he acknowledged that there is a problem of organized crime, he minimized his government’s responsibility by ensuring that it is a “global” problem. In that sense, he failed to mention that, so far in January, 106 people have been murdered, and another 2,120 died in the same way in 2024. These data reveal that our country has a rate of 6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, a alarming figure if compared with other countries.

Argentina, for example, had a rate of only 3.8 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024; while El Salvador reported a rate of 1.9, with only 116 homicides throughout last year. If the security crisis were global, as Boluarte maintains, no country, much less one in Latin America, would have records so different from those of Peru.

Added to these disturbing data are the recent attacks with explosives against homes, businesses, mining companies and even the headquarters of the Public Ministry in Trujillo. All this framed in the inaction and apathy of the Executive Branch that waited a whole month to observe the law that restores preliminary detention in cases without flagrante delicto and when the Congress It was already on recess. An action that, without a doubt, weakens the fight against crime that plagues the country.

No corruption?

In Davos, the president also distanced herself from corruption. “The mark of this government will be to work with clean hands. We have not had any cases of corruption in the two years and one month that we have been there…” he stressed.

And the Rolex case? As if the national news did not cross the Atlantic, the head of state conveniently omitted that she is immersed in an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office for improper passive bribery and illicit enrichment for the possession of numerous Rolex watches that she claims were loaned to her by his ‘wayki’ Wilfredo Oscorima. Nor did she say that she is being investigated for the ‘Cofre’ case, irregularities at Midis and the alleged abandonment of her position due to surgery.

Even less did he account for the tax investigations of the Los Waykis en la Sombra case, in which his brother Nicanor Boluarte is involved, for having intervened in the appointment of prefects and sub-prefects in order to use them to achieve the registration of his Ciudadanos por party. Peru and having received the Cajamarca mayor Nixon Hoyos at his home, who would later receive a million-dollar budget for his region. Then, when the press uncovered these serious facts, the head of state pointed out: “The relative they mentioned does not work for the State and he is completely free to receive whoever he wants.” But no, as Boluarte said in Switzerland, his hallmark is “working with clean hands.”

As icing on the cake, the president assured that her government “has not overstepped its bounds in generating greater debt (…) or public spending,” despite the fact that the Fiscal Council and the Central Bank have warned that her administration raised public spending to 3.6 % of GDP. Likewise, he boasted of the low inflation and solidity of our currency, but that achievement belongs to the Central Reserve Bank, not his administration.

Dina Boluarte met with the presidents of Finland, Alexander Stubb, and of Panama, Raúl Mulino.
