However, sources from the organization consulted by Diario La R indicated that there is a majority inclined to reject the request.

The first of the proposed changes aims to enable “cross voting”, which would allow voters to combine on one ballot for mayor of one party and another for mayor of a different motto, without the vote being annulled. Currently, this practice is not allowed, and if ballots from different parties are detected in the same envelope, the vote is declared void.

Independents and Colorados maintain that this prohibition harms them electorally, since the current system favors polarization between the National Party and the Broad Front in the race for mayors in several departments. With the crossed vote, a voter could support a mayor from a majority party while still supporting a mayor from a minor party, such as Colorado, without the risk of invalidating their vote.

The second request consists of authorizing the candidacy of citizens who participated in the 2024 internal elections for a party different from the one they now represent. This change would allow us to adapt to the formation of the Republican Coalition, which will compete in Montevideo, Canelones and Salto.
