The escalation of violence that occurs in the Catatumbo region has generated one of the most complex dramas of recent years, which until now It has left alarming figures in terms of displacement, confinements, deaths and missing persons.

According to the Ombudsman’s Office there are more than 32 thousand people who have been displaced from various parts of the department, especially to the city of Cúcuta where more than 15 thousand people have arrived, in Ocaña there are more than 11 thousand displaced people and more than 5,300 in the municipality of Tibú.

However, the authorities in the department continue to carry out humanitarian work to attend to this population and also extract a significant number of people who have left the area out of fear.

During the last hours, the Army carried out humanitarian work in Catatumbo that allowed the extraction of six members of an indigenous community from the municipality of Tibú, among which was a pregnant woman and those who were confined by the fighting between the ELN and Farc dissidents.

Likewise, there have been more than 120 humanitarian flights where a significant number of people have been evacuated that were affected by the fighting between the ELN and FARC dissidents for a week.

On the other hand, after the clashes between organized armed groups, 14 members of the FARC dissidents surrendered voluntarily to the authorities, including a minor.

In the municipalities of Tibú and El Tarra, Catatumbo area in Norte de Santander, the submission to justice of 14 members of structure 33 of the Magdalena Medio Block of the FARC, among them a minor from this group outside the law.

According to the Army, these people They sought shelter and protection in a military unit, When they surrendered they had in their possession abundant war, administration and communications material.

A minor was also separated and handed over to the competent authority to restore his rights.

On the other hand, the Ombudsman’s Office confirmed that in the last few hours, 31 people who were in the power of the ELN were handed over to a commission of the Ombudsman’s Office, the Catholic Church and local authorities.

Added to the release of former mayor of the municipality of San Cayetano Antonio José Marín on behalf of the ELN who had been kidnapped since last December 27.

Likewise, they are evaluating the possibility of allowing humanitarian corridors in the region and little by little de-escalate the conflict and territorial control in Catatumbo.
