The state company Petroperú was fined 36 UIT after failing to comply with one of the six administrative measures that it was ordered to carry out after the oil spill on the beaches of Talara, according to Alex Uriarte, Director of the Environmental Supervision Directorate at the OEFA.
“The first measure issued to Petroperú has not been complied with. As a result of this non-compliance, we issued a report and have issued a coercive measure accordingly. We have already imposed a first fine of 36 UIT on Petroperú as a result of this verification. The other measures are being verified and for this we have a team in the permanent field.“, he told RPP.
Uriarte stated that there are still incidents of the spill on some beaches affected by hydrocarbons after a month after this event occurred.
“Yesterday, January 20, we had hydrocarbon presence in Peña Negra, Cabo Blanco and other beaches. The fine is dictated by several aspects, one of them is the identification and control of the source (of the hydrocarbon spill). Due to this first measure that he has not been able to comply with, that fine has been imposed.”, he said.
Mayor of Lobitos after a month of the oil spill: “The damage to the marine ecosystem must be compensated”
The mayor of Lobitos, Ricardo Bancayán, stated, one month after the oil spill in said town, that there is still no progress with the cleaning of the marine ecosystem, as he indicated that work was only carried out on the beaches, but not in the sea. .
“We have already been harmed on the seabed, which is the problem that must be compensated. (There is) damage to the ecosystem. The damage to the marine ecosystem must be compensated. There we are not attacking that problem, nor is Petroperú or the government. The OEFA is doing the studies“, he told RPP.
The mayor affirms that the version given by the manager of Petroperú, Oscar Vera, that everything was 100% clean, he only mentioned it to get out of trouble.
“It was a version that suddenly, due to the ease of getting off the topic, he mentioned it, but at that time when he said that we still did not have the work completed, nor had we advanced to 90% in beach cleaning.”, he stated.
Bancayán expressed that this environmental incident affected the economic activities and quality of life of the residents of Talara, since the beaches are empty.
“The fisherman cannot go out fishing, the hoteliers stopped receiving guests. The entire tourist chain that occurred in summer has been affected, that is why we are waiting for the reports to end. We ask that those affected be recognized. Not only compensation for the population, but also recovery of our sea”, he said.
