SLP, Mexico.- The Cuban authorities reported that in 2024 there were 634 deaths due to traffic accidents, a figure slightly lower than that recorded the previous year. However, the number of people injured in accidents increased.
According to the meeting of the National Road Safety Commission, in which the Vice Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca and the Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila participated, in 2024 there were 7,507 accidents, which represents 12% less than the confirmed last year.
However, those injured in the recently concluded year were 6,613, higher than the 5,938 in 2023.
Pointing out that the human factor continues to be the main cause of the accidentsCuban officials mentioned that not paying due attention to vehicle control caused around 30% of accidents. Disrespect for the right of way, excessive speed and the consumption of alcoholic beverages, together with the poor condition of the roads, have also been the cause of accidents.
According to officials’ data, some 665 drivers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. For driving while intoxicated, 1,204 licenses were withdrawn: 20 canceled due to repeat offenses and another 35 due to complaints of drunkenness.
Although the regime alleged that the poor construction structure of the roads is not the main cause of the disasters, it admitted that “in general they are in poor condition.”
Raúl Cano López, second head of the body specialized in criminal investigation and common crime of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), expressed his “concern” about the increase in electric motorcycles and mopeds in vehicular circulation, often driven by minors.
“A significant number of electric motorcycle drivers are identified without the corresponding driving license, even with ages under 16,” he indicated.
Many of the violations recorded related to this type of vehicle are caused by alterations in the electrical systems to allow them to reach higher speeds and the use of “non-approved” helmets.
He highlighted as the “most frequent violations” failure to pay attention while driving the vehicle, loss of control, not granting the right of way and others associated with fatigue, performing another act or maneuver while driving, ingesting alcoholic beverages or substances that affect the ability to drive.
In conclusion, they pointed out that in Havana state entities do not have “adequate” control of professional drivers, which could affect the accident rate involved in mass passenger transportation. The number of accidents involving this type of vehicle continues to be high.
