A delegation with 24 high-level experts from the United Nations (UN) is in Belém, in the state of Pará, on a mission to monitor preparations for the 30th Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be held between November 10th and 21st.Preparations for COP30 impress UN representative

On the first day of field visits, the group met with representatives of the organizational committees of the federal, state and municipal governments. Throughout the week, the mission will learn about hotel infrastructure, logistics planning, transportation, public safety and health infrastructure.

According to the deputy executive secretary of the UNFCCC (acronym in English for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), Noura Hamladji, the mission is not evaluative and aims to support the organization in making COP30 a success.

“I am very impressed with the planning, but also with the level of investment of R$5 billion and also with the commitment and commitment of the authorities from the federal government, the state government and also the municipality here in Belém. These are very important ingredients. important for success”, he said, after seeing the numbers presented by the extraordinary secretary for COP30, Valter Correia.

The Brazilian government expects to receive around 100,000 visitors over the two weeks of the conference. In 2024, COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, the event received 54,148 in-person participants including registered delegations, observers, guests and support staff.

According to Valter Correia, the expectation is that strengthening tourism will be an important legacy for the Amazon. “We are working tirelessly to deliver a COP that has all the conditions to guarantee the success of global climate negotiations,” he declared.

According to the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), Belém is already experiencing growth of more than 59% in visitor arrivals by air, in the period between January and November 2024, when compared to the previous year, before the announcement that the capital of Pará would host the global conference.

In addition to government investments in infrastructure, there are actions to improve the hotel network, build more accommodation, train professionals in the tourism sector focused on sustainability and renovate tourist attractions throughout the metropolitan region.
