UCV University Council: Police siege on campus seeks to intimidate and deter

For several days now, a strong presence of officials from various security forces has been reported around the UCV.

He University Council of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) issued a statement in which it rejects the presence of officials belonging to different State security forces in the surroundings of the University City of Caracas, emphasizing that it is “unusual” and that it has no any justification.

In a letter, dated January 15, the UCV assures that there are no reasons for the troops to be present under the argument that their stay is to avoid possible alterations to public order, as well as highlighting that the university community knows how to exercise its right to peaceful protest and that, for the moment, there are no announced mobilizations that justify the presence of the police forces.

He said that it cannot be interpreted as meaning that they want to offer security to those who live in the UCV, since the number of uniformed personnel may be “excessive” for this purpose.

For this reason, he considers that the presence of the security forces is nothing more than intimidating and dissuasive, which in turn generates a climate of tension and “rest” that hinders the development of a good environment on campus and, in that sense, They ask that they not disrupt life there “through unnecessary displays of power.”

Already in days gone bythe Faculty of Dentistry of that university rejected that the University City is “fenced” by officials from various security forces, which in their opinion generates fear and restricts the academic freedom of the community that lives on the campus.

In the text, said Faculty warns that, instead of providing security, the presence of the troops turns them into “hostages of a system that fears the truth and constructive criticism,” in addition to affecting well-being, concentration and development. of the activities at the UCV due to the tension produced by their stay at the entrances of the campus.

He also rejected that the UCV is surrounded and that, in addition to being a violation of autonomy, it represents a “serious attack” against human rights and democratic principles. In addition, they repudiated the persecution against students and other personnel who work at that university and therefore demand the release of those who are detained.
