New donation from China for the electrical system will arrive in Cuba

A donation of parts and accessories for generating equipment left this Sunday from China towards Cuba, with the objective of supporting the operation of the island electrical systemwhich faces a deep and prolonged crisis.

Alberto Blanco, Cuban ambassador to the Asian nation, reported on the shipment and thanked the Communist Party, people and Government of that country for the gesture for contributing to the recovery of the capabilities of distributed generation. report the agency Latin Press (PL).

He adds that this donation project “responds to the consensus between the presidents of the island, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and the Asian giant, Xi Jinping, which include multi-sector cooperation.”

This is the second delivery of this type promoted by the Chinese Government after a similar load will arrive on the island at the end of last December.

The publication specifies that the highest level agreements signed between both nations include areas such as political dialogue, the joint promotion of the Belt and Road initiatives for Development and Global Security, the execution of projects in energy, transportation, food safety, computerization of society, industry and commerce, among others.

As part of this strategy, in mid-September 2024, China donated ten generators to Cuba for the generating sets in the midst of the situation due to the high electricity generation deficit.

The media recalls that recently the two countries, which this year celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of relations diplomats, formalized an investment project in renewable energy, which provides for the installation of seven photovoltaic parks of five megawatts each in six Cuban provinces.

It is expected that the arrival at their destination of the components for the assembly of these facilities will be completed in the coming months by sea.

Cuba is going through a prolonged energy crisis in recent years, due to repeated breakdowns in its thermoelectric plants, with decades of operation and a chronic investment deficit, and to the lack of fuel, due to the lack of foreign currency to import it.

Frequent blackouts weigh on the Cuban economy, which contracted 1.9% in 2023 and did not grow last year, according to government estimates. GDP remains below 2019 levels.
