In a devastating outcome, the authorities of Sogamoso, Boyacá, confirmed that the lifeless body found on January 12 in the village of El Ciral corresponds to Sarita Michel Vargas, a girl of only 11 years old who had been missing since December 25. of 2024.

The case has generated national outrage, especially after it was revealed that her cousin, Juan R., who initially helped in the search and publicly protested for the minor’s freedom, was captured as the main suspect in the crime.

The mayor of Sogamoso, Mauricio Barón, confirmed that Sarita’s body was found just 1.5 kilometers from her home, in a rural area.

“This has been reported by the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI). We hope that the person captured for this act pays and responds promptly for the macabre crime committed against the humanity of Sarita Michel,” Barón declared with visible consternation.

A close relative, the main suspect

Juan CR, cousin of the victim, was arrested on January 17 for the crime of forced disappearance. The authorities found traces of blood in his home and motorcycle, evidence that directly linked him to Sarita’s disappearance. Yes

According to the investigations of the Attorney General’s Office, he was the last person to see her alive.

The case has become even more disturbing due to Rodríguez’s actions after Sarita’s disappearance. Before his capture, he actively participated in the search for the girl and even protested in front of the Palace of Justice demanding her early freedom.

In one photograph which was widely circulated on social media, he is seen holding a sign that read: “Missing you. We want your soon return, Sarita”.

The community of Sogamoso and the entire country are dismayed by this case that exposes the vulnerability of children in Colombia. The Prosecutor’s Office has assured that it will continue to work tirelessly to clarify the facts and guarantee that the guilty party receives an exemplary sentence.
