Carnival performer Márcia Lage, from Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, a samba school belonging to the elite of Rio carnival, died this Sunday (19). She was 64 years old and was facing leukemia, a cancer that affects blood cells.
The confirmation was made by the association in a publication on social mediain the early afternoon. “The brilliant professional left us this Sunday morning.” In mourning, the school announced the suspension of social activities “for an indefinite period”, including a street rehearsal that was scheduled for this Sunday.
Alongside her husband, fellow carnival artist Renato Lage, Márcia had returned to school in 2024 to sign for this year’s carnival, when the green and white girl from the west zone will take to the sambadrome a manifest for the future of humanity.
Trajectory
Also alongside Renato Lage, Márcia was champion of Group A (access) of the Rio carnival in 2008, with Império Serrano.
From 2003 to 2017, the couple was together in 13 Acadêmicos do Salgueiro carnivals, with the best placings being runners-up in 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2015. The last parade prepared by Márcia was in Portela, in 2023. She stayed three years in blue and white.
Márcia Lage had already worked for Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel in 2002, when she finished in fourth place in the elite group of the Rio carnival.
In Rio de Janeiro, the carnival also signed parades in Grande Rio (2018 and 2019). In São Paulo, she worked at Vai-Vai (2016) and Império de Casa Verde (2007).
Repercussion
Samba schools demonstrated on social media in respect for the carnival.
“It is with immense sadness that Imperatriz Leopoldinense receives the information of the death of the carnival worker, Márcia Lage. We wish lots of strength and love to family and friends; especially Renato Lage and our sister, Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel”, wrote Imperatriz Leopoldinense.
Beija-Flor classified Márcia Lage as “one of the great references of Brazilian carnival”.
“Márcia leaves an unforgettable legacy of creativity and passion, which will continue to inspire the world of samba. In this moment of pain, we sympathize with family, friends and the entire carnival community, especially our goddaughter Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel”, published the Nilópolis school.
