The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported that cases of diphtheria, polio, rubella, measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases remain under control, according to the first Epidemiological Bulletin of the year.
It details that, in the case of diphtheriaDuring 2021, 41 probable cases were reported, of which 20 were confirmed. The most affected age group was 1 to 4 years old, with 17.7% of the cases corresponding to children of Haitian nationality. The fatality rate from the disease that year was 31.7%.
“These cases were quickly contained, thanks to the activation of rapid response teams, the implementation of epidemiological fences, the monitoring and control of contacts, the active search in the communities and the reinforcement of vaccination against diphtheria,” said SP. .
He highlighted that between 2022 and 2024, the number of cases decreased significantly. «8 probable cases and 13 confirmed cases were registered. In 2022, 5 probable cases were reported, while in 2023 there were 5 confirmed and 3 probable; In 2024, only 2 probable cases were reported,” he said.
«The MSP remembers that diphtheria is a disease that can generate sporadic cases or outbreaks in areas with low vaccination coverage, due to the accumulation of unvaccinated people or with incomplete schedules, therefore, it urges the population to go to the centers vaccination programs spread throughout the country, following the vaccination schedule established for the little ones,” he added.
Meanwhile, statistics on cases of polio, rubella, measles, tetanus and whooping cough reflect incidences less than 0%.
Dengue
Likewise, in the National Epidemiological Bulletin corresponding to Epidemiological Week 01 of 2025, no cases of dengue have been reported, which last year, compared to 2023, presented a reduction of more than 65%. Cholera, leptospirosis and COVID-19 are also under zero notification in this first report of the year.
Regarding child deaths, 19 cases were recordedwhile in 2024 52 had been reported, reflecting a decrease in these indicators.
In SE-01 four maternal deaths were recordedtwo of Dominican women and two of Haitian nationality. Last year, in this same period, three maternal deaths were reported.
