AREQUIPA, Peru – Some 88 political prisoners have been released in Cuba as of 2:00 PM (local time) on January 18. This, after the Castro regime announced this week the release of 553 inmates within the framework of a relaxation of US sanctions and, supposedly, another agreement with the Vatican to celebrate the Ordinary Jubilee of 2025.
The figure was revealed in the permanent count of the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) and, according to the platform, around 64% of those released had between one and three years left to complete their sentence.
For its part, the non-governmental organization Prisoners Defenders recorded in its most recent report that at the end of November 2024 in Cuba There were 1,148 political prisoners. To date, releases represent just over 5% of that total.
This Saturday morning, the renowned Cuban opposition figure Félix Navarro Rodríguez was released, who also suffered political imprisonment during the Black Spring of 2003 and is a promoter of Cuba Decide.
Navarro was arrested along with his daughter and other activists after the popular protests of July 11, 2021 (11J). Both were sentenced to nine and eight years in prison.
