The history of the coat of arms of Colombia: its changes and meanings

There have been many debates about the national emblem.

News Colombia.

The coat of arms of Colombia is one of the most emblematic patriotic symbols of the country, and its evolution reflects the historical, political and cultural transformations of the nation.

Although its current design was adopted in 1954, its history dates back to the colonial period and has gone through several significant modifications over time.

Origins of the shield

The first shield associated with Colombia was the one adopted in 1548, during the colony. This showed a black eagle in the center, which symbolized freedom, a concept at that time linked to the Spanish crown. This initial design served as the basis for future developments.

After independence, in 1819, the nascent State of Colombia (then known as Gran Colombia) adopted the coat of arms of Venezuela as a temporary symbol.

However, in 1821, with the definitive formation of Gran Colombia, the shield was modified to represent all the member states.

In 1834, the shield underwent new alterations, highlighting the incorporation of the Andean condor as a central element. This bird, which symbolizes sovereignty and freedom, replaced the black eagle.

A more subtle, but significant change occurred between 1834 and 1954: the condor’s head, which originally pointed to the left, was repositioned to the right.

The ephemeral shield of 1854

One of the most curious episodes in the history of the shield occurred in 1854, when a design was adopted that only lasted eight months.

Although brief, this change represents the country’s political instability during that time and the desire to seek new forms of national expression.

The current shield

The shield we know today was ratified in 1954. It incorporates the Andean condor in flight, with a laurel wreath that symbolizes victory and glory.

In the center, there are elements that represent the natural riches and diversity of the country: a red Phrygian cap (symbol of freedom), two cornucopias and a ship in the open sea, alluding to trade and the coasts of Colombia.

The changes proposed by Gustavo Petro

Recently, President Gustavo Petro raised proposals to update national symbols, including the shield. Among the suggested ideas is the incorporation of elements that represent indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, as well as a greater emphasis on biodiversity.

Petro has argued that these adjustments could better reflect the country’s cultural and natural diversity. These proposals have generated debates between sectors that support the inclusion of new elements and those who prefer to keep the shield as it is.
