Conflict at LUMIN Plant

BERKES workers in Lumin Plant in Cerro Largo they stopped activities since noon yesterday due to poor working conditions

They denounce lack of safety and hygiene.

About 120 workers from the company that carries out tasks at the LUMIN plant in Melo, stopped their activities this afternoon in protest against working conditions.

Roque Calcagno, secretary of SUNCA, explained the reasons for the stoppage:

“The work is stopped, colleagues are working in unacceptable conditions. They carry out tasks underground, in an environment full of dust and without irrigation to minimize it. Furthermore, with these high temperatures, they do not have fresh water, they only have access to hot water from the tap. “The workers are not animals to put up with this.”

Calcagno highlighted the magnitude of the work, considered the largest in Cerro Largo, and questioned that a company like Berkes does not guarantee basic conditions for its employees:

“It is a huge project, and it is not acceptable that workers have to face these situations. That’s why we decided to stop, so that this reaches the press and becomes visible.”

The measure seeks to draw attention to working conditions and demand immediate improvements in the workplace.
